Happy Labor Day!

I hope those of you who are fortunate to be off from work today are enjoying the festivities! For those who are working, we thank you for your efforts and your labor. We wouldn’t be able to enjoy this day without the many men and women who have toiled tirelessly to perfect their craft, from the most basic to the most complicated work, providing the many amenities for which we are grateful.

In 1882, Labor Day began with the labor movement, which was to limit work to an eight-hour day. That left eight hours to rest and eight hours for recreation. Other countries also celebrate a similar day and consider it a national holiday. We recognize this day as a Federal Holiday and the end of the summer season in the US.

We also consider Labor Day a Patriotic Holiday to commemorate the many economic achievements accomplished by American workers in our country. Sometimes there’s a theme for the day; for example, in 2020, we rallied around workplace safety and security.

But the meaning is far more than celebration. There is an emotional undertone of pride in work done well. Here are some thoughts about the virtues of work:

“Without labor, nothing prospers.” Sophocles

“There’s no substitute for hard work.” Thomas Edison

“I learned the value of hard work by working hard.” Margaret Mead

And here’s a quote from Albert Einstein, yes, you probably read it last year, but I’m pretty fond of the sentiment:

We have additional inspiring thoughts from Scripture:

“For you shall eat the fruit of [the labor of] your hands, you will be happy and blessed and it will be well with you.” Psalm 128:2 (AMP)

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people.” Colossians 3:23 (GNT)

Whether we labor intellectually or physically or both, we have the opportunity on this day to recognize others’ labor and take pride in our work well done. Let’s appreciate what we have and strive to become what we were created to be. Our actions will be honoring and continue to encourage!

Happy Labor Day 2021!

Be Well & Be Blessed!
