This week is our last week to explore the character trait of self-discipline, so I’ve included some sage words from the past.
First from Horace:
“Rule your mind or it will rule you!”
Powerful words of wisdom! Often we find ourselves neglecting to discipline our minds. Unfortunately, a lack of self-discipline in this area can not only cause unhealthy thoughts; it can lead to a downward spiral that culminates in sadness, depression, and anger.
Next from Lao Tzu:
“Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is True Power.”
Perhaps a more accurate word to replace mastering for our purposes is leading. As we continue to hone our leadership skills, directing others well is a definite strength. Guiding ourselves through self-discipline takes us to an entirely different level of management that can render the former infinitely more effective.
Finally, from Aristotle:
“What it lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do.”
Of the three quotes, I think this is my favorite because it gives us permission to choose. We can choose to do the things that are beneficial for our development, AND we can opt not to do that which is detrimental. In all things we have the right to exercise choice, and after all, isn’t that what self-discipline is all about?
Exercise self-discipline this week in a way that will “…renew your mind…” (Romans 12:2), increase your leadership skills, and render the best possible choices. Have faith in yourself and your abilities to continue modeling a lifestyle that promotes the culture of Wellbeing and service!
