“It’s very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxing. Not only does it help prevent the onset of many illnesses that develop through chronic tension and worrying; it allows us to clear our minds, focus, and find creative solutions to problems.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Buddhist monk from Vietnam who promotes peace through mindfulness teachings in centers throughout the world. We support his instruction on the importance of rest and hope you scheduled some downtime of your own this past weekend!
We know how adequate rest improves physical functioning, but we sometimes overlook the internal benefits rest provides from a mental/emotional and spiritual perspective. Rest helps us to become grounded and stabilizes our minds from continually striving. We plan, think, calculate, and then worry about what we’ve been rehearsing in our minds, and seldom slow down to let our thoughts settle.
Respite also assists us with calming our spirits, particularly when our weeks are so packed with activities and distraction. For some, interacting socially is the recipe for relaxation. For others, quiet repose is the key to gaining some precious leisure time. In any case, calendaring rest into our busy schedules is necessary to overall wellbeing.
Although there are many activities and plans to be addressed in the coming weeks, be sure to protect your quiet time. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for the effort by providing more creative time with greater focus.
Have a full week taking care of every aspect of your Wellbeing!
Be Well and Be Blessed!
