Happy Monday!

I hope you had a chance to rest over the weekend! It’s so important to take time for self-care and reserve a few hours each week to take a break from our busy schedules.

I appreciate the sentiment of this quote from Audre Lorde. Ms. Lorde was an American writer, professor, and activist most remembered for her book The Cancer Journals, which chronicled her illness. For her, self-care was, indeed, an act of survival.

The beauty of self-care is that there aren’t a lot of rules on how to do it or what it should look like. For some, self-care is a quiet day at home, reading, creating, or simply resting. For others, it might be a hike, a day of shopping and prepping for the week ahead, or spending time with people we love. There are so many ways to manage self-care that it seems difficult to believe we don’t give ourselves this gift more often.

Scripture gives us instructions on rest and self-care:

“God blessed the seventh day and made it special because, on that day, he rested from his work.”  Genesis 2:3 (CEV)

“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (GNT)

Rest is an act of survival. It keeps us from getting weary, gives us unique perspectives  and the ability to use our minds well, and renders us capable of anything we attempt to do because it helps us to see beyond perceived limitations.

I’m writing this on Sunday after a hectic week. Writing is restful for me, but I will take the afternoon off and rest because I need more today. I recommend you plan to indulge in your own rest this week. I’ll bet you’ll feel better because you did!

Be Well & Be Blessed!
