Marcel Proust was a French novelist and considered to be among the most influential 20th Century authors. His most notable work was À la recherche du temps perdu, which translates to In Search of Lost Time. The work was seven volumes totaling about 3,200 pages. It was later translated under the name of Remembrance of Things Past.

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy…” What an excellent thought! In this world of entitlement, drama, and strife where happiness can be elusive, isn’t it lovely to consider those who bring joy to our lives? Perhaps there’s someone at work who regularly brings a smile to our face. Maybe it’s that person at the grocery store or favorite restaurant. Or, that special person might be a small group leader or instructor. When we come in contact with him or her, we begin to smile from the inside, knowing the delight that particular someone brings to our heart.

Whoever these people are, the “charming gardeners who make our souls blossom” deserve to know how grateful we are to them for the joy they bring and for the ways they cause us to pause from the rigors of day-to-day life and experience a moment of mindfulness. These are the people in our tribes who embody the saying:

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

This week, consider taking a moment to thank someone who may not expect it. Perhaps a gift of some sort would be appropriate or maybe a donation to further the cause. The action we take will demonstrate both gratitude and kindness. Let’s give of ourselves to appreciate others who are generous to us.

“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.”

2 Peter 1:5-7
