August has arrived and with it the excitement of school beginning and more summer heat! I hope you’re enjoying the last vacation days of the season and are looking forward to the challenges and rewards ahead. Remember, please, to keep yourselves and your pets hydrated, as it seems like we’re in for more hot summer weather.

August is the month we focus on the character trait of fairness. When we think about fairness, we think of aspects, such as being impartial, open, and unprejudiced. These qualities are true in judging ourselves, as well as others. I like what Brit Hume has to say about fairness:

“Fairness is not an attitude. It’s a professional skill that must be developed and exercised.”

The quote brings up another, related topic – change. To practice fairness, we sometimes need to be open to change.

I believe the message here is to embrace change, even if it’s scary at times. Being open to new perspectives enhances our ability to engage in a transformation that can lead to openness and can mitigate the harshness of automatic judgment that can be hurtful, personally, and might be damaging to others. Releasing control and adopting an impartial and unprejudiced attitude can be challenging, but the benefits of freeing ourselves from constricting worldviews can be liberating. The practice might also open the door to positivity, which leads to a greater sense of Wellbeing.
