A penny for your thoughts!
No, really. What are you thinking about? Right now, where are your thoughts? Are they running through the list of things that should be accomplished this week? Perhaps you’re revisiting events from the past few days. Or maybe you’re camped on events that happened months or even years ago. Are there so many things going on in your head that you’re already feeling worn out?
Often, we say to ourselves, if we could just concentrate on the task at hand, we would be able to complete principal objectives with a calm demeanor and clear head. We, however, as a society value multitasking. We’ve been taught that juggling many things is the sign of a successful person. I wonder if that’s truly the case.
Paul Martinelli, entrepreneur and international business leader, stresses the importance of directing our thoughts. He maintains that:
“Focus is necessary to develop and grow.”
When we harness our propensity to replay the reels of our lives and add direction and guidance to our natural curiosity and explorative nature, we realize exponential development and growth. It takes a little bit of time to hone those skills, but the benefits far outweigh the effort.
Why not look for ways to focus. Maybe make a to-do list. Some find that mindfulness practices, like taking mini intentional breathing breaks help. Or perhaps a 10-minute walk to get some fresh air and create space in our minds. As we become more focused on the things that are deserving and most important and bring those ideas to the forefront of our minds, the less important thoughts will take their rightful place.
