Happy Monday!
I learned last week from a dear friend and prayer warrior that in South Africa, there was another celebration known as Youth Day on Thursday (the day after U.S. Flag Day). The day is dedicated to appreciating how the youth of 1976 fought the apartheid government. I love learning about celebrations throughout the world. So whenever you know of a commemoration or celebration, please email me in advance so I can include the event in the Monday Musings. This way, we all can appreciate something new and interesting in other parts of our beautiful world.
Today we observe Juneteenth in the U.S. The date is actually June 19th and is the commemoration of the abolishment of slavery and the most recently recognized Federal holiday beginning in 2021. The purpose of this day is to remember the end of the Civil War and, consequently, an end to slavery.
Sometimes referred to as the Day of Hope, it is also known as Freedom Day. As it’s now nationally regarded, there’s a new focus on contemporary issues, such as economic inequality and victory over social injustices.
Here are some notable quotes:
“God’s time [Emancipation] is always near. He set the North Star in the heavens; He gave me the strength in my limbs; He meant I should be free.” Harriet Tubman
“We all require and want respect, man or woman, Black or White. It’s our basic human right.” Aretha Franklin
“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” Desmond Tutu
“Juneteenth is not a Texas thing. It’s not a Black thing. We’re talking about freedom for everyone.” Opal Lee
And one of my favorites from history, but still relevant today:

Here are some beautiful Scripture references:
“It was for this freedom that Christ set us free [completely liberating us]; therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery [which you once removed].” Galatians 5:1 (AMP)
“The Lord is God, and He has given us light [illuminating us with His grace and freedom and joy].” Psalm 118:27a (AMP)
“The Spirit of the Lord God has taken control of me! The Lord has chosen and sent me to tell the oppressed the good news, to heal the brokenhearted, and to announce freedom for prisoners and captives.” Isaiah 61:1 (CEV)
As we honor the conflicts fought on and off the battlefield, let’s set our sights on the acceptance, understanding, and compassion that are the foundations of freedom. Let’s look kindly on our brothers and sisters and practice unconditional love and regard. And let’s learn from history and grow from past failures and victories.
Be Well & Be Blessed!
