Sounds like good advice!
Respect is one of those qualities that follows the rule of reciprocity. The word reciprocity is defined as a quality of being mutually dependent in action or influence. It’s most commonly used when countries or institutions exchange privileges. How refreshing to think of respect as an exchange of privilege! I wonder how many disagreements would be thwarted if people looked at respect as an exchanged privilege that could be exercised as a means of mutual influence. Perhaps we would be more inclined to look for amicable ways to resolve our differences with thoughtful creativity and unconditional positive regard.
Mother Teresa once said, “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” We think she practiced love and mercy by respecting others and choosing to be nonjudgmental. Her life served as an example for us as she emulated dignity and respect toward others.
This week, why not practice the exchange of privilege as you look for salient ways to respect one another. We think you’ll find the spirit of reciprocity to be engaging and fulfilling.
Have a wonderful week!
