Recently, I was reminded of a passage in Scripture that encourages us to, “Honor all people” (1 Peter 2:17 NKJV). It was shared in the context of effective leadership and was the guiding thought in a discussion on measuring the health of an organization. I thought this was a fitting verse to include in the discussion this week, as respect and discernment are foundational to acquiring the skills necessary to practice fairness.
Brit Hume, noted journalist and commentator, is credited with this thought:
Exercising fairness means setting an example in the ways we listen and respond to people, carefully form opinions, are courteous, apologize when necessary, and are impeccable with our word. In this way, we foster the same traits in others, encouraging their growth and wellbeing.
This approach works especially well in our professional lives and is invaluable in our relationships with family and friends.
Practice fairness this week, whenever the opportunity presents itself. I’m positive you’ll be amazed by the results, and it will be one more tool at your disposal in your personal development and that of others.
